This boat
could be the answer for those who want something bigger than
a beach cat, with the same thrills, but without the big boat
price tag. With minimum material costs and no hull mould to
build this would be ideal for the enthusiastic amateur builder.
The hulls
are 4mm plywood tortured into shape, then fibreglassed inside
and out. Cedar stringers and foam/carbon ring frames will
reinforce the structure, while the forward berth will be a
long structural subdeck, finishing behind the main beam. The
curved deck will be ply bent over stringers and frames.
Hull access
will be via a midships hatch, with 1.4m headroom and two berths
per hull. However it is more likely that cooking and sleeping
will happen under a boom tent on the trampoline.
Three
alloy beams connect the structure, with netting in between.
A central pod between the beams will house the outboard and
anchor.
Being
so light and easily driven the rig doesn't have to be big
to make this boat go fast. A typical 3/4 multihull rig will
be used with three stays and diamonds on the mast, along with
a gennaker flown off the prod.
The existing
boat 'Hard Drive' has proven very competitive, and has competed
successfully in many Auckland and Coastal races.
