Sailing & Design Background
I completed my boat building training with Advanced Trade Certificate from Hopwood Yachts from 1983-87. At the same time completing the then Carrington Technical institute Small Craft Design course.
During 1987-88 I worked on the Steinlager project yachts at Southern Pacific Boat Yard. Steinlager 1 was the 18m trimaran that won the Around Australia race in 1988, and Steinlager 2, the 25m IOR maxi, won every leg of the 1989-90 race.
Following that I assisted the building of the plug (patterns) for a range of Bonito powerboats. Also I gained 9 months sailmaking experience at Lidgards sail loft.
From 1988 to 1994 I sailed in the very competitive Paper Tiger catamaran class, including three inclusions in the New Zealand Inter Dominion team. During those years my business focus was on providing foils, hulls and sails to the Paper Tiger fleet.
During 1993 I designed and built the Viper 5m catamaran, which was a little like a skiff with two hulls: twin trapeze, hiking wings, carbon mast, and a selection of sails and gennakers, all of which I built myself. This was campaigned successfully amongst the much larger Multihulls
Since 1994 I have competed in the Coastal Classic each year on a variety of multihulls, including the Trimaran 'Dragon', the Turissimo 'Slice of Heaven', on the 10.6m cat 'Energiser', in which we won its division, and 'Occams Razor'.
I have sailed on most of the Auckland fleet of multihulls at some stage, either racing or cruising.
During 1996-7 I was involved in designing some replacement floats for the high performance 9m trimaran 'Dragon', and designing and building the TC 790 racing catamaran, built from 4mm stressed Plywood, 'Hard Drive'. This boat has gone on to be a successful competitor in the NZMYC race fleet.
Over the nearly five years I have been designing and building my cruiser racer TC 10m Catamaran which incorporates much of the innovation that you'll see on subsequent boats. 'Pulse' has been in the water since 2001, and has been most successful both racing and cruising.
My building method has been a success, using strip foam sandwich in female frames to produce a foam sandwich boat economically, without expensive set up costs.
I have many times been to Europe and USA to investigate the developments in multihull design and building; and came back each time confident that New Zealand is at the forefront of progress.
A more recent part of my business has been developing electric boats. The EloTri range is a unique trimaran hull form, powered by an electric motor, and recharged by shore power, wind or solar energy. They are light weight for efficiency both on the water and when being towed. Ideal for families and fishing on the sheltered waterways of the world, who care about the environment, and who perhaps want the simplicity of power boating with the purity of sail.
I can now offer my practical experience of multihull sailing along with my design skills to present a range of modern multihull designs.
Happy Boatiing!
