TC Design Electric Boat Designs

The joy of electric boating is the near silence and simplicity of moving through the water, so suddenly you can enjoy the sounds around you, rather than constant engine noise, or monitoring sailing systems. As well the maintenance is low and reliability high compared to a complex internal combustion engine.

Much as I a a keen sailor and performance yacht designer, the industry has become a boutique one in the face of mass produced consumer yachts.

What does seem to sell well, is family run abouts, easily towed behind the family car, and easy to run and maintain. It has surprised me that despite the era of alternative fuelled vehicles being well and truly on us, powerboats have remained immune to change. Until now!

You may think small powerboats are reasonably fuel efficient, but that is wrong. At full speed they are around 10 times worse than a large 4 wheel drive vehicle on the road. See the graph below.

I was involved in the Friesian Solar Race in 2008, in which I designed for the FuriaOne team the foiling trimaran you see below. It was a great event with lots to learn.

From there the ‘EloTri’, as in ‘Electrically Operated Trimaran’ series was born. On the design board is the ‘EloCat’ Range too. Both featuring low resistance at displacement speeds, and so low wake.
